Imagination, creativity and expression are characteristics which distinguish individuals, individuals’ activities or the phenomena they initiate. They were viewed differently in the old times due to the use of different tools allowing people to express themselves, their views, or to expose their creative and scholarly work. Yet imaginativeness is also the individual’s ability (or a condition, depending on the interpretation) to create inner worlds or experiences which are sometimes shared with the outside world and in other situations hidden from it.

Without any doubt, expression and creativity go hand in hand with new trends and support different areas of human activity. Therefore, the organisers suggest the participants to consider the following themes (individual imagination and creativity in the choice of topic are encouraged as well):

  • Creation and imagination in culture and popculture (fine arts, literature, film, TV series, comic books, music, video games, fashion)
  • Imaginativeness and artistic expression, creative potential;
  • Narrative imagination
  • Media and social media as creation tools (selfies, autocreation, celebritism; image creation; stage image; fake news etc.);
  • Imagination and creation in marketing, advertising etc.;
  • Psychology and imagination;
  • Child imagination;
  • Confabulation, fraud, forgery;
  • Imagination and senses;
  • Imagining about the world – now and then; imagined worlds;
  • Imagining the future;
  • Re-creating the past;
  • Imagination and creation vs. technology and civilisation;
  • Creation vs. politics and power;
  • Religions and mythologies;
  • Imagination vs. reality;
  • Imagination vs. simulation.

Proposals which are not listed above will also be considered. This includes case studies adapting monodisciplinary and interdisciplinary methodologies.

Abstracts are to be submitted via e-mail to wik.konferencja@gmail.com till 17 November 2019. Kindly send an editable file (.doc, .docx, .rtf), with the document title following the template: “Name Surname. Presentation title”. The file should contain:

  • abstract (max. 600 words);
  • biographical note (max. 80 words), including the author’s title, affiliation and research interests;
  • contact information: phone number and e-mail address.

The conference fee is estimated to be 360 PLN.

We are planning to publish the articles in a peer-reviewed monograph in the series “Perspectives of Postmodernity” or in an issue of a scholarly journal (depending on the number of articles submitted for review after the conference).

The event is free-of-charge for listeners who are not presenting.

Comics in Culture/Culture in Comics

The aim of the conference is to present a wide array of perspectives of different forms of comics and their role in culture. Comics, as a unique combination of literature and visual arts, spanning from child entertainment, through popculture, to independent artistic expression, are a great source of interdisciplinary research. This is why we welcome entries on variety of topics exploring the relations between them and culture.

Vladimir Nabokov and the Fictions of Memory

Almost 40 years after Nabokov's death his texts continue to function as literary Fabergé eggs in which scholars keep finding hidden surprises and previously overlooked details. As Nabokov wrote in Conclusive Evidence, "the unravelling of a riddle is the purest and most basic act of the human mind." However, readers and critics are divided on the issue of whether Nabokov is a postmodern riddle-maker enjoying the game itself without enabling the player to reach the ultimate solution, or whether the riddles are solvable by a reader astute enough to follow all the sophisticated patterns and allusions which point to Nabokov's metaphysical convictions.

THE 1ST BIAŁYSTOK CONFERENCE ON THEORETICAL AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS

In recent years linguistic conferences organized by the Białystok circle of neophilologists have established a strong tradition in terms of providing a forum for the exchange of views on the nature of language. It all started almost fifteen years ago, in 2002. The main aim of the conferences was to provide a meeting ground for a wide range of scholars: linguists, literary scholars, foreign language teaching methodologists, to mention but a few groups of researchers participating in the events. The conferences explored the relationship between language, culture, and social interaction. They were often organized in co-operation with French language scholars.
