The Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw) is one of the Partners in the ‘Shaping Interdisciplinary Practices in Europe’ (SHAPE-ID) project which has been awarded funding of €1.5m through European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme.

SHAPE-ID is the answer to the challenges of the modern world which ought to be approached through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The project will produce practical recommendations for the European Commission. These will be concerned with transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in research, especially in social sciences and humanities. SHAPE-ID is coordinated by Trinity College, Dublin. Other partners institutions are based in Holland, Scotland, Switzerland and Italy.

Transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary projects allow to deepen our understanding of new phenomena and to find solutions to challenges Europe faces in areas like health, food and agriculture, climate change, technological innovation. Once the scholars of different disciplines collaborate, the social impact of their research is likely to increase. SHAPE-ID covers both SSH and STEM sciences. The consortium will: analyse existing initiatives which encourage or hinder interdisciplinary collaboration, examine cooperation of different institutions within international consortia and invite researchers, representatives of the cultural sector, activists, funding organisations and other experts to share their experiences.

The European Commission accepted the project in summer 2018. SHAPE-ID launched in February 2019 and will finish at the end of July 2021. In its first phase the team has been focusing on literature review. The next stage will involve developing a survey and a series of workshops. Finally, the team will analyse all the gathered material and formulate recommendations for the European Commission.

The IBL PAN Team in the project consists of employees of the Digital Humanities Centre (Dr. Maciej Maryl, Dr. Piotr Wciślik, Dr. Anna Buchner. Collaboration: Marta Błaszczyńska, Maria Wierzbicka). Their main tasks include: work on literature review and text analysis of a large dataset with application of digital methods, support in running the survey, and organisation of a workshop devoted to interdisciplinary issues in digital humanities.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 822705

Jak podjąć współpracę interdyscyplinarną z naukami humanistycznymi i społecznymi: rekomendacje dla badaczy i instytucji

Humanistyka i nauki społeczne stanowią nieodzowny komponent inter- i transdycysplinarnych badań naukowych. Komisja Europejska podkreśla ich szczególną rolę w misjach Unii Europejskiej. W wielu konkursach z programu Horyzont Europa należy uwzględnić i opisać rolę nauk HS w projekcie, nawet jeśli dotyczy on innych dziedzin. W polskiej nauce, w ramach III kryterium ewaluacji próbujemy wykazać wpływ społeczny nauk HS, który często jest mniej bezpośredni i trudniej uchwytny, niż w przypadku nauk ścisłych

Architectural Literary Studies

Bertrand Westphal’s definition of geocriticism and its further developments were the starting point of the “Architectural Literary Studies” project. Research activities proposed in reference to it involved literary research analysis that could be used by other disciplines dealing with transformations of the urban space. It was important, firstly, to inquire about interdisciplinarity (and its limitations), understood as a method adapted by a researcher who uses concepts and theories from other disciplines, and, secondly, to try to develop a transdisciplinary research model based on collaboration within a multidisciplinary team. A 14-person research group analysed two Warsaw squares: Piłsudski Square and Parade Square (Plac Defilad).
