Jego zainteresowania naukowe koncentrują się na historii podróżopisarstwa, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dziewiętnastowiecznych podróży do i po Azji.

Pełnił funkcję kierownika dwóch grantów Narodowego Centrum Nauki.
