Polish studies were established in the Department of Slavic Languages in 1993 as part of the first-cycle philological studies with the specialization "Polish Language and Literature". It owes its thirty years of existence to the efforts of Prof. Mykola Lesiuk, head of the Department of Slavic Languages, who built a research and teaching team, prepared the teaching facilities (the department's book collection is of particular value, having received 3,000 books from the library of Prof. Władysław Kupiszewski as a gift), and also took care of the development of academic cooperation between Poland and Ukraine.
The author of the first program of the Polish studies specialization was Dr. Inna Bielajewa, a graduate of the University of Lviv, who defended her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Renata Grzegorczykowa from the University of Warsaw. Classes in the field of linguistics at that time were taught by Dr. Olga Łazarowycz and Dr. Olena Pełechata, while Dr. Olga Ciwkacz was responsible for literary subjects. The group of lecturers was quickly joined by graduates - Dr. Daryna Mycan, Dr. Ulana Marczuk, Dr. Anna Pyłypiw, Dr. Ulana Rys, Dr. Tamara Tkaczuk, Dr. Iryna Spatar, and in time Dr. Mariana Skrypnyk, Dr. Natalia Dorohowycz, Dr. Oksana Korpało, Dr. Natalia Szczerbij and Dr. Oleksij Worobec. Prof. Mykoła Łesiuk always made sure that students could have classes with a Polish lecturer, as part of international exchange programs, Czesław Dembiec, Maria Czernowskiej, Sr. Marta Ryk, Iwona Antoniak, Maria Panasiewicz, Artur Tomczak, Gabriela Augustyniak, among others, lectured. Currently, Samanta Busiło, referred by NAWA, has been working in the department for over ten years. Today, in addition to the Polish studies specialization, the department also offers students a Polish teaching specialization and a Polish and English studies specialization (first language – Polish), developed at the initiative of Dr. Olena Pełechata. At that time, the directions of scientific research carried out by individual members of the department team were also determined – dialectology, sociolinguistics, semantics, phraseology, the linguistic image of the world, linguistic glottodidactics.
The years 1993-2025 were a time of persistent work in the scholarly and didactic field, but also of intensive international cooperation, with the University of Warsaw (Department of Ukrainian Studies and the Institute of Applied Polish Studies, the Jakub of Paradyż Academy in Gorzów Wielkopolski, the Pomeranian University in Słupsk, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, numerous conferences and research projects). It was also a time of building ties with the academic community in Ukraine, thanks to didactic projects, as well as programs promoting the Polish language. The All-Ukrainian Spelling Competition organized under the patronage of the Polish Embassy by Dr. Olena Pełechata (17th edition until 2022), initiated by Dr. Artur Tomczak, has gone down in the history of Polish studies, as well as the relatively young tradition of the NIGHT OF TRANSLATORS competition addressed to students and young scientists from Ukraine organized under the patronage Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv by Samanta Busiło. It is also worth emphasizing the role of long-term cooperation coordinated by Dr. Olga Łazarowycz with the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, allowing students to complete dialectological internships in Poland.
It is also worth mentioning the importance of programs financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange as part of the Polish Language Promotion Program implemented in 2020-2025 together with the University of Warsaw, including: Dookoła języka i literatury [Around language and literature] (2020), 9 wykładów dla polonistów - językoznawstwo, glottodydaktyka, translatoryka [9 lectures for Polish philologists - linguistics, glottodidactics, translation studies] (2021), Studiuj i badaj po polsku [Study and research in Polish] (2023), together with the Polish Academy of Sciences - Ryby, żaby, raki czy Rupaki? [Fish, frogs, crayfish or Rupaks]? (2022), together with the University of Siedlce - Translation Zone (2023), coordinated on behalf of the Precarpathian University by Samanta Busiło. These programs allowed not only the development of Polish-Ukrainian scientific and teaching cooperation, but also the integration of the Polish language community from Ukraine, as they gathered participants from several academic centers from Ukraine, which is worth noting - during the pandemic and war. As part of their implementation, special editions of Poradnik językowy [Language Guide] (1/2022, 10/2022, 10/2024) were created, as well as teaching materials supporting the education of Polish as a foreign language, second - Ryby, żaby, raki czy Rupaki? (2023), as well as an anthology of Aurelia Wyleżyńska's texts translated into Ukrainian (ed. Beata Walęciuk-Dejneka, in preparation, publication XI 2025).
In addition to scientific and teaching activities, it is worth noting the efforts of the department's employees aimed at popularizing the Polish language and culture and supporting teachers of Polish as a foreign/second language and programs implemented in the years 2017-2025 in cooperation with the Center for Polish Culture and European Dialogue in Ivano-Frankivsk. With the support of the Senate of the Republic of Poland in cooperation with CKPIDE, Samanta Busiło also organized methodological workshops for teachers and lectures conducted by experts of the state commission for the certification of knowledge of Polish as a foreign language, lecturers from prestigious Polish universities from Warsaw, Gdańsk, Łódź, Kraków and Lublin. As part of this cycle, the following training courses were held: Mówimy na B1! (2020), Piszemy na B1! (2019), Lektor budzikiem (2018), Lektor 2.0 (2017).
In October 2018, the university received the authorization of the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language to conduct state certification exams in Polish as a foreign language. In addition, the university cooperates with the Center for Polish Culture and European Dialogue in the framework of conferences, publications, seminars, festivals promoting Polish culture, history and language, such as the conference in Yaremche devoted to Polish-Ukrainian relations, Polish Culture Days and others. Another important initiative is the project of rebuilding the astronomical observatory BIAŁY SŁOŃ, implemented in partnership with the Center for Eastern Studies of the University of Warsaw under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, an initiative supported by employees of the Department of Slavic Languages.
