The Department of Polish Language and Literature began its activity in the academic year 1992-1993. Initial lack of interest from candidates resulted in the suspension of recruitment in 2001. However, when the Department resumed its activity in 2014, the number of applicants exceeded the expectations of Istanbul University.
Currently, approximately 70 people are accepted each year for the preparatory level, during which future students master Polish at B2 level (intensive course five days a week for 5 hours). However, this does not mean that so many manage to overcome the difficulties in mastering the Polish language. Usually, about 20 students are accepted for the four-year bachelor's degree program.
In the academic year 2018-19, classes for the postgraduate, two-year master's degree program began. In 2025, for the first time, it will be possible to continue the studies on the doctoral level.
The Department's employees teach classes primarily in practical and theoretical knowledge of language and descriptive grammar, but also in literature (divided chronologically by year into eras) and the history of Poland and Polish-Turkish relations.
Since 2014, in addition to teaching and research, intensive promotional activities have been carried out to promote knowledge about Poland. Every May, Polish Days lasting several days are organized, to which lecturers from Poland are invited to present the latest research methods or expand the knowledge of students of Polish studies and other fields. Promotional activities are carried out in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Istanbul and the LOT airlines.
The Department also has a scientific club for students of Polish studies: Lehçe Konuşma Kulübü, which publishes a magazine presenting the individual interests of students in Polish affairs.
The Department's cooperation includes several research centers in Poland. Every year, at least several researchers visit us as part of the Erasmus program.
Since 2014, the head of the Department is Prof.Dr. Hacer Topaktaş Üstüner.
